All this Presidential stuff going on is getting Washington, D.C. quite a bit of limelight! It reminds me of the perfect girl’s getaway I took with my mom and sister. Before Alex and I officially tied the knot, my mom was celebrating a very special birthday and there really was no better way to celebrate it than to have an entire weekend with just the girls. I definitely feel like we had a great mix of everything we wanted to see and do, so I’m sharing this itinerary to Washington, DC. with you all today!
It was a busy year for all of us with the wedding, my sister’s 18th birthday and graduation. Mom definitely had her hands full and she deserved nothing less than a quick vacation. We hopped on a plane headed to Washington, D.C. in the fall (my mom’s favorite season) when the leaves are bright yellows, reds, and oranges. The weather was crisp and the crowds weren’t around (perfect for short lines at Georgetown Cupcakes). We booked ourselves solid for a weekend of cupcake eating, boutique hopping, and photo ops.
Here’s the itinerary
WHERE TO STAY
We stayed near the Capitol at Hotel George. Although we spent most of our time in Georgetown, this Kimpton boutique hotel was a great stay during our girls getaway. I let the hotel know ahead of time that we were celebrating my mom’s birthday, so it was very sweet of them to surprise her with a bottle of wine and a box of chocolates!
WHERE TO EAT
DAS Ethiopian: 1201 28th St NW, Washington, DC 20007 | D.C. is known for being home to lots of ethnic cuisine. Alex recommended eating some Ethiopian food, so we did! It wasn’t really our thing, but we had a blast eating the traditional Ethiopian way – with our hands!
POV at The W Hotel Rooftop: W Washington D.C., 515 15th St NW, Washington, DC 20004 | An iconic rooftop, POV has an impressive view of the White House. It’s a chic place to see and be seen so make sure to dress accordingly. Have a few drinks, order some apps, and soak in the sites from the top. Oh, and sing happy birthday to the birthday girl!
Carluccio’s – Old Town Alexandria: 100 King St, Alexandria, VA 22314 | Can’t say enough great things about this place. Amazing brunch with a great value!
WHERE TO SPLURGE (ON SUGAR)
I like to call D.C. the Cupcake Capitol. I think we each ate close to ten cupcakes in one weekend! Both Georgetown Cupcakes and Sprinkles are a MUST – and no I can’t pick a favorite.
Georgetown Cupcakes: 3301 M St NW, Washington, DC 20007
Sprinkles Cupcakes: 3015 M St NW, Washington, DC 20007

TAKE IT ALL IN
No matter how much you plan, it’s so important to live in the moment and do what makes you happy. You ARE on vacation after all and that’s what vacations are for! We had so much fun shopping on Georgetown’s Main Street, taking leisurely strolls and admiring the quaint streets, and visiting Georgetown University. We also spent the day in Old Town Alexandria – it’s worth it! The town looks like it belongs in a book and there are so many unique, local shops to visit.
And one more thing – don’t forget to take pics! At the end of the day, your memories are all you have.
